It may be autumn, but the living is still easy at Moruya. Not that we are there, but in the heat of the summer it was a great escape from a parched and baked Canberra. Our newly insulated shed was as comfortable on a hot night as Canberra is […] Continue Reading…

Not a good look
Subliminal factors contribute strongly to election results. That intangible “I don’t know what it is, but there is something that I don’t like about x,” feeling only needs to affect one or two percent of voters to be significant.
Labor’s handling of the subliminals in this campaign have been poor. […] Continue Reading…

Cyclone enters Queensland election
(Cross posted from What the people want) Yesterday The Australian’s analysis of the latest Victorian Newspoll suggested that the increase in the Victorian government’s vote was due to the fires which have devastated the state.
The theory rests on the presumption that natural disasters unite the community, and that as […] Continue Reading…

Coy about their negatives
(Cross posted from What the people want) When I went to find the most effective TV ads from Labor and the LNP to road-test on our surveys they were nowhere to be seen. It’s common political wisdom, and I think true, that positive ads don’t change governments, negative ads […] Continue Reading…

Galaxy confirms our polling
(Cross post from What the people want). Tomorrow’s Galaxy poll (with the teaser released today on the CM website) confirms our polling. It shows a six percent swing against the government. My polling suggests 7% or thereabouts. Pretty damn close, particularly as we don’t really set-out to measure quants.
So, […] Continue Reading…

Surge to LNP on calling of election.
(Cross posted from What the people want.) In the first week of the election there has been a strong swing in sentiment against the government, somewhere in the vicinity of 7.5%. If this were reflected in the election result Queensland would most likely have a new government and a […] Continue Reading…

In the interests of disclosure….
Last week I said the gov is planning to cut back on public disclosure requirements for industrial carbon emissions.
Today they replied to my email query, and even sent the discussion paper.
Yes, the period for comment was brief, but closer to 3 weeks than a few days. And yes, it […] Continue Reading…

Government as jukebox
There’s nothing wrong with a good aporphism/cliche, and ‘he who pays the piper calls the tune’ is as reliable as they come.
The previous government gave about $18 million (that’s taxpayers’ money) to Pacific Brands, and the current government is now disappointed that the execs have used some of […] Continue Reading…

It’s 50/50 – first quant poll of the Queensland election
(Cross post from WTPW)The Courier Mail published a Galaxy poll this morning which has the Government and Opposition each on 50% of the two-party preferred vote.
This is broadly consistent with my prediction that the LNP would win 12 to 15 seats, which was based on the softness in the […] Continue Reading…

It’s depressing – TNS survey
(Cross posted from What the people want).
A TNS survey conducted around the same time as our last federal political omnibus comes to similar conclusions. If respondents were given $1,000 surplus only $220 would be spent with the rest being saved or used to pay down debt.
TNS also finds that […] Continue Reading…
