Respect for its agreements or human rights are certainly not part of the current Russian program. 'Bull in a china shop' is about right, and Russia's former allies see this.
Proxy wars over oil and gas are now the norm.
The real purpose is to assert Russian military potency in opposition to the growing power of NATO, which is being used as a UN surrogate.

Interesting, but here is another similarly interesting article: <a href="http://www.watchdog.cz/index.php?show=000000-000004-000002-000053&lang=1&bold=georgia" rel="nofollow">http://www.watchdog.cz/index.php?show=000000-000004-000002-000053&lang=1&bold=georgia</a>
If Russia was as blame free and lillywhite as it is painting itself in this issue, why on earth would so many of it's former allies be changing sides?
Indeed, given the justification advanced for the invasion of Georgia, the protection of Russian citizen's, how is this supposed to affect Ukraine, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, etc? All of these countries hold substantial ethnic Russian minorities, so what constitutes a real need for protecting them with the might of the Russian Army?
Also, given the 'concern for human rights' expressed by Russia, why would they send in one of their most wanted war criminals in order to bring order to the area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulim_Yamadayev)?
